NiMH vs Lithium Ion: Which battery is better for electric toothbrushes?
Rechargeable batteries in electric toothbrushes these days are either NiMH or Lithium-ion cells. What are the differences? Is one better than the other?
This question is important because nearly all powered toothbrushes have build-in batteries, you are not supposed to change. In order to be able to enjoy a long life, it is important to know how to treat your battery and what to avoid.

Nickel-metal or NiMH Battery
NiMh batteries have a higher energy density compared to nickel–cadmium (NiCd) type . This is the amount of energy it can store in relation to its size. And with toothbrush handles size does matter a lot more than with i.e. a power drill.
All battery types self-discharge over time. That means they use power even when not used. NiMH cells loose loose the most energy the first day after charging. It slows down after that and the amount of power it is loosing over time depends a lot on temperature. Higher temperature means it will discharge faster. Another factor that plays a roll here is age. Older batteries discharge faster than newer ones.
No matter how “full” a NiMH cell is, it is able to power your toothbrush with nearly the same voltage. You will not notice any difference in brushing speed until the battery is almost dead.
When it comes to security, NiMH batteries have very small risk of bursting when overcharged. Overcharging will cause hydrogen gas to build up within the battery. In order to protect the cells from rupturing, the have a safety valve to allow the gas to safely escape.
Depending on the brand a Nickel-metal cell can be charged 180 to 2000 times. When it not longer can hold the charge, it is recyclable. The chemicals used are just mildly toxic which makes the battery kind of environmentally friendly.
The often feared memory effect is negligible if you treat your battery right.. It is true that partial discharge may lead to memory effect. Fortunately it can be treated by charging and discharging the battery completely a few times. It is not a very practical solution though if you consider a charging time of around 12 hours some electric toothbrushes require. If you want to do a few cycles you would not be able to use your brush for several days. Lithion-ion cells do not have this problem.
Lithium ion or Li-ion Battery
Lithium ion batteries have a higher energy density than NiMH batteries. Smaller sized batteries allow to build slimmer handles.
Another advantage is the faster charging. There is no need to wait for 12 hours before you can use your new toothbrush.
The self-discharge rate of Lithium-ion cells is much lower than the NiMH kind. Additionally there is no memory-effect. The need to discharge and charge them completely is not necessary to prolong the battery’s life. On the contrary, draining a Lithion-ion battery completely is not advisable. It will ruin it. The build-in computer should that takes care it does not happen.
One disadvantage of this battery type beside the higher price is a slight safety risk. In contrary to other types the electrolyte used is flammable and the whole battery is under pressure. Faulty manufacturing can lead to fires and resulted in recalls in the past. You may have followed the issues Samsung had with their S7 batteries.
A lot of toothbrush owners complain that their toothbrush dies shortly after the warranty of two years end. That is no surprise if you know, that Lithium ion cells age. The average life span is two to three years.
The Oral-B Pro 1000 is a no-frills electric toothbrush, but it gets the job done, and it gets it done well. It comes with a CrossAction* brush head that reaches into every nook and cranny between and within your teeth to scour away up to 300% more plaque than a manual toothbrush would remove.
*Pro 1000 comes with many types of packaging, and with different types of brush heads bundled
If you prefer another type of brush head, however, there are plenty to choose from; the Oral-B Pro 1000 is compatible with nine different Oral-B heads, including whitening, sensitive, extra gum line cleaning, deep clean, orthodontic care, and floss action. Just twist and pull to switch out the brush head.
Oral-B Pro 1000 [Old Brush Handle Design]
Oral-B Pro 1000 comes in 4 different brush handle color, one CrossAction brush head and one induction charger, it does not comes with any original travel case
Oral-B Pro 1000 [2021 New Brush Handle Design]
In 2021, Oral-B released a new Pro 1000 series that comes with a new brush handle design, it comes in 4 different brush handle color, one CrossAction brush head and one induction charger, and still does not comes with any original travel case
The toothbrush handle has an easily accessed on/off button, and the brush vibrates gently every 30 seconds to let you know it’s time to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth. The sections include the inside of upper teeth, outside of upper teeth, inside of lower teeth, and outside of lower teeth. Press too hard, and the toothbrush will stop rotating – overly vigorous tooth brushing is a major cause of gum irritation. When you let up the pressure, the brush will automatically begin to spin once again.
The Wirecutter chose the Oral-B Pro 1000 as their top-pick electric toothbrush, and Health also selected this electric toothbrush as its number-one choice.
On Amazon, the Oral-B Pro 1000 is one of the best-selling electric toothbrushes, with nearly 5,500 reviews and an average of 4.4 stars. Buyers like the brush’s simplicity, its effectiveness, and its reasonable price. Many also appreciate being able to swap out the brush head for one that better suits their needs.
Expect to recharge the Oral-B Pro 1000 about once per week. You’ll see a flashing red light when the battery is getting low. The recharging base is very small, so there’s no need to clear much counter space.
Pros: Great price, effective at removing plaque, many types of compatible brush heads
Cons: Not as fast or as powerful as some newer electric toothbrushes
Oral-B’s 7000 SmartSeries is another one of the brand’s high-end toothbrushes. It offers all six cleaning modes (Tongue Cleaning, Daily Clean, Sensitive, Gum Care, Whitening, and Pro-Clean) so it can adapt to your needs for a different brushing experience when you want it.
This model comes with a round Cross-Action brush head, with its bristles arranged similarly to that of the Genius Pro 8000. With over eight hundred brush movements per second, the unique bristle design and the motor work together to clean each tooth thoroughly.
The 7000 Smart
Series has a pressure indicator built into the middle of the body in
the shape of a ring. The ring glows red if you are pushing too hard on
your teeth. Compared to the previous models that only featured a strip
of light on both sides, the ring is so much clearer, and makes it really
obvious if you’re doing damage to your teeth. Also, for users with big
hands, you won’t need to worry about accidentally covering the
indicators as you brush.
The 7000 Smart Series is equipped with a NiMH battery and usually lasts ten days on a full charge.
Conversely, one aspect of this device that I appreciated the most was the black rubber grip areas built onto the front and back parts of the handle. This made it easier to continue holding and using the toothbrush, especially when it got wet.
The 7000 Smart Series comes with a premium travel case which is similar to that of the Pro 8000 in terms of build. However, it cannot charge your smartphone nor your toothbrush. This could be attractive for travelers who are just looking for a good place to store away their toothbrush.
Overall, this model is a solid option for people who still want to dish out the extra money for a high-end toothbrush but can live without some of the additional bells and whistles.
Genius X, (or Genius iBrush 20000 for China packaging), is released in 2019. Genius X is available in new colour options, has a different box contents and perhaps most significantly has Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI technology is allowing Oral-B to rework and improve the offering that was the Genius 9000.
With the Genius X, there is no smartphone holder, no need to stand in
front of a camera. Sensors and clever computer wizardry track your
brush movements, reporting back to you, just how well you brushed and
letting you know where you could do better.
Oral-B has 4 different variants of the Genius X.
Technically, from a feature and cleaning capability, they are all the same.
What differs are the colours of the toothbrush handles and heads, the items included in the box and potentially the price.

The Genius range is generally marketed in the US, UK, Australia and EU countries. While the same Genius range are marketed in China as iBrush series.
Similar to Genius 9000, iBrush 9000 Plus comes in Black, Rose Gold and White color. All bundled component parts are similar except The China packaging iBrush 9000 Plus is more generous, coming with 5 brush heads compare with Genius 9000’s 4 brush heads.
What’s the difference between iBrush 9000 and iBrush 9000 Plus? Everyone knows that Genius 9000 is famous for the inclusion of the Premium Smart Travel case that have USB charging capability. In China, Oral-B introduced 2 varieties of their own iBrush 9000.
iBrush 9000 Plus is similar to Genius 9000, except with an additional brush head. And for buyer who wants the full feature of the Genius 9000 brush handle, they can choose the iBrush 9000, which is almost 1/3 cheaper in price, but without the premium Smart Travel case, and coming with 3 brush heads only.
The following picture provide the detail features and components bundled for boteh variety.
The ibrush 9000 (the simple version) comes only in black or white color.
iBrush 9000 & 9000 Plus Similar to the Oral-B Genius 9000, iBrush 9000 & 9000 Plus is Oral-B’s most exclusive, flagship electric toothbrush. It is a fantastic electric toothbrush, that we personally use on a daily basis and therefore we can give you an in-depth review of why we think this electric toothbrush is awesome.
The Oral-B iBrush 9000 is a fantastic electric toothbrush that provides you with all the tools you need to maintain healthy teeth and gums. It does have a high price tag however, this is more than offset by the technology and usability of the brush.
Styling The styling of the electric toothbrush is close to perfect and is a great balance between ergonomics and design. The Oral-B iBrush 9000 is chunkier and more solid in construction than other cheaper Oral-B models. It features a rubberised back of the electric toothbrush handle which is soft to touch and extremely grippy when wet. This is useful as the Oral-B iBrush 9000 can be used in the shower because it is waterproof
The front of the electric toothbrush handle has two buttons an on/off switch which gives good feedback when pressed and a downward arrow which changes between the cleaning modes. There are 6 cleaning modes in this model which are extremely easy to change between. The Oral-B iBrush 9000 also remembers the last cleaning mode you put it on, so you do not have to constantly flick between them every time you turn on the brush.
The front of the electric toothbrush lights up when turned on, which makes it easy to see what cleaning mode you are on. There is a handy battery indicator which accurately depicts if the battery is low. There is also an icon letting you know if the Bluetooth is switched on or off.
At the top of the brush is a thin metal rod that is used to connect the Oral-B iBrush 9000 electric toothbrush handle to the brush head. The Oral-B iBrush 9000 is compatible with almost all of the Oral-B Brush heads.
2 Minutes Timer & Quadpacer The Oral-B iBrush 9000 features a 2 minutes timer with inbuilt Quadpacer. This is an essential feature for any good electric toothbrush. The Quadpacer is an on handle timer that “buzzes” every 30 seconds to indicate when you are supposed to change areas of your mouth. In daily clean mode, it also “double buzzes” when you have reached 2 minutes of brushing.
Having a two-minute timer built into your toothbrush is extremely important. On average people only brush for 45 seconds, which has a seriously detrimental effect on your oral hygiene. If you only brush for 45 seconds then it will leave a layer of dental plaque on your teeth, which will ultimately lead to gum disease and tooth decay.
The Quadpacer means you will brush your teeth more evenly. Most people have a favoured side when brushing. This means that one side of your mouth gets brushed well whilst the other side doesn’t. A Quadpacer will remind you to regularly change areas leading to a more consistent clean.
Bluetooth connection and Position Detection As with most high-end Oral-B electric toothbrushes, the Oral-B iBrush 9000 comes with Bluetooth connectivity which links to the new and improved Oral-B App. The Oral-B App is available on both Android and Apple. It is so easy to set up and literally takes 30 seconds.
Having the Oral-B app on your smartphone provides a great aid to brushing and has:
A visible 2-minute timer allowing you to see exactly how long you have been brushing for
A pressure sensor monitor showing you how long you pressed too hard for
Guidance from a dental professional allowing you to create customized brushing routines with your dentist
Brushing activity and achievements that motivates you to keep up your brushing habits
National Geographic images that gives you something to look at when you are brushing your teeth
Smart Phone Holder The Oral-B iBrush 9000 comes with a smartphone holder that allows you to stick your smartphone to a mirror.
With the Oral-B iBrush electric toothbrushes, they also come with position detection. Position detection is where the electric toothbrush can tell which areas you have cleaned and which you have missed. Areas which are frequently missed when brushing can lead to plaque accumulation and gum disease.
Visible Pressure Sensor with 360-degree smart ring If you press too firmly with an electric toothbrush it can cause a type of footwear called toothbrush abrasion. This over time can lead to gingival recession and sensitive teeth.
To prevent this from happening, Oral-B has installed a visible pressure sensor on the back of the electric toothbrush handle. To make this pressure sensor even fancier, Oral-B has made it completely personalisable with a 360 degree smart ring. This allows you to chose the colour that the ring changes when you turn the electric toothbrush on.
To change the colour of the 360 degree smart ring it is really simple. After connecting the brush via Bluetooth to the Oral-B app, go to settings and click on toothbrush handle. Under visual, you will have a choice of 12 colours, click on your preferred one and voila it is set up. The whole process literally takes 20 seconds to do.
Battery Life The Oral-B iBrush 9000 comes with an extended battery life which has often been the downfall of the Oral-B range. This electric toothbrush comes with a 2 week battery life when used twice a day for 2 minutes. This is extremely convenient as it means less downtime.
The lithium-ion battery that the Oral-B iBrush 9000 uses also charges extremely quickly taking around 5-6 hours from flat. This means you can leave it to charge overnight and it will be ready to work for another 2 weeks in the morning.
The battery indicator light on this model is much improved compared to the cheaper Oral-B pro electric toothbrushes. The Oral-B iBrush battery indicator light lets you know well in advance before it needs charging and is very accurate.
The charging station featured on this electric toothbrush is similar to the ones featured on the older Oral-Bs. It can hold up to four separate brush heads which is extremely useful for multiple users.
Smart Travel Case (Note – Only available for the iBrush 9000 Plus model) The Oral-B iBrush 9000 Plus comes with a beautiful, soft touch, premium travel case. It provides good protection to the electric toothbrush handle on your travels and also serves as a charger for your electric toothbrush handle and has a USB port to charge your smartphone. This feature is unique to the Oral-B iBrush 9000 Plus.
The travel case also houses two brush heads for you to use on the handle and comes in two colours either white or black. The only model to come with the black travel case is the Oral-B iBrush 9000 Plus.
The travel case can also hold your smartphone so that you can use your position detection and Bluetooth connectivity when you are on your travels. This means that you do not need to take your smartphone holder with you.
What’s In The Box for iBrush 9000 Plus? The Oral-B ibrush 9000 box is pretty cool. It has a magnetic flap that lets you see the electric toothbrush handle through the front of it.
Inside the box the contents is well packaged and safely wrapped up. The Oral-B iBrush 9000 Plus box contains:
Oral-B Genius 9000 electric toothbrush handle

Oral-B Genius 9000 electric toothbrush handle
3 x Oral-B Brush Heads

Note – iBrush 9000 does not come with any travel case
There is little difference between the iBrush 9000 and the iBrush 10000 (as we explain in more detail below), but the iBrush 10000 was launched in China and later in some European countries as genius 10000.
Oral-B have a wide variety of electric toothbrushes, ranging from the basic, functional and very affordable, right through to the more premium, feature rich and fairly expensive. The iBrush 10,000 is the latest brush to be added to this lineup and it sits firmly at the premium end of the range.
Please note: The Oral-B range is very confusing and differs from country to country. If you can spare the few extra minutes, it is worth reading the remainder of this article to fully understand the 10,000 and what it offers.
Compared to the Genius 9000 or iBrush 9000, it is essentially identical. Subject to your location, brush colour, price and potentially box packaging and contents is what sets these 2 brushes apart.
iBrush 10000 – the longer and detailed explanation The iBrush 10000 was launched in late 2018. According to Oral-B, the 10000 was launched to celebrate the introduction of new colours, not previously available.
Those colours are orchid purple and midnight black (this is where the brush heads are black too – not previously the case on other ‘black’ coloured Oral-B brushes).
In addition, the iBrush 10000 gains ‘gum protection technology’, the New Gum Guard technology, and a different accessory pack, the configuration Timing Reminder
Oral-B New Gum Guard technology
In some respects, as the model number suggests the 10000 is superior and is the new replacement to the 9000. However, whilst it might seem this way, this is not quite correct. Excluding price, brush colour and some additional accessories in the box, the iBrush 9000 and the iBrush 10000 are identical.
Both models have the same cleaning modes, the same smart ring, the same battery life, the same built in timer and pressure sensor, use the same brush heads and both have the same Bluetooth connectivity.
What’s in The Box? The ibrush 10,000 come with the following box contents.
1 x Brush handle
1 x CrossAction, 1 x 3D White & 2 x Sensi UltraThin brush heads
1 x Premium Smart Travel Case
1 x Travel case charger
1 x Smartphone holder
1 x Charging stand
1 x Brush head storage compartment (holds 4 heads)
